Dry eye disease after LASIK
LASIK is a surgical tehnique for the correction of refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, astygmatism). It results in a reshape of the cornea with ocular surface and especially tear film disease. It is a cause for a iatrogenic dry eye syndrome. Neurogenic and inflamatory theory explain this disease. The main therapy of dry eye is the replacement with artificial tears.
متن کاملPreoperative characteristics and a potential mechanism of chronic dry eye after LASIK.
PURPOSE To determine whether measurable preoperative characteristics predispose patients to chronic dry eye after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS The study consisted of 24 eyes of 24 patients who underwent LASIK. Tear breakup time, Schirmer testing with and without anesthesia, rose bengal staining, central corneal sensitivity, nucleus-to-cytoplasmic ratio, and goblet cell densit...
متن کاملDry eye disease after refractive surgery: comparative outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction versus LASIK.
PURPOSE To compare small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) versus LASIK for post-refractive dry eye disease. DESIGN Prospective, comparative, nonrandomized clinical study. PARTICIPANTS Thirty patients scheduled for bilateral myopic SMILE and 30 age-, sex-, and refraction-matched patients scheduled for bilateral myopic LASIK were enrolled and followed for 6 months after the surgery. ME...
متن کاملDry eye after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
AIMS To determine the incidence, natural course, and severity of dry eye occurring or worsening after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (SCT). METHODS At a tertiary care hospital, 53 patients undergoing allogeneic or autologous SCT followed by at least 180 days of follow up were studied prospectively. Examination included grading of symptoms of dry eye, evaluation of ocular surface, te...
متن کاملChronic dry eye symptoms after LASIK: parallels and lessons to be learned from other persistent post-operative pain disorders
Laser in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is a commonly performed surgical procedure used to correct refractive error. LASIK surgery involves cutting a corneal flap and ablating the stroma underneath, with known damage to corneal nerves. Despite this, the epidemiology of persistent pain and other long-term outcomes after LASIK surgery are not well understood. Available data suggest that approximatel...
